OPERATION COMPASSION DEVELOPS NETWORK WITH HOPE OF LIFE

Hope of Life under the direction of Carlos and Cheryl Vargas is a multifaceted ministry located in the village of Llano Verde, Zacapa, 146 kilometers from the capital of Guatemala. With a 1,000 acre enclosed complex, Hope of Life ministers through a 500 student school for needy children, the orphanage has a capacity for 400 children and their elderly home can accommodate 75. In addition, their complex also has furnished dormitories complete with running water, showers and electricity, several classroom , a cafeteria and staff ready to serve up to 500 people,24 hour medical services, a computer lab and many other amenities.

For several years, Hope of Life has developed a ministry theme of “your church, your missions, our country.” This theme has opened doors for many denominations to join in a missions endeavor specific to their needs and denomination. The Vargas’ have a strong working relationship with many denominations have help to start many churches across the country of Guatemala.

A church or ministry can participate with Hope of Life to build churches, medical clinics, feeding stations or homes while staying on their complex. Colleges and universities have been bringing students to work during times of disaster such as Hurricane Stan.

After several meetings with Carlos Vargas, Operation Compassion has begun a network with Hope for Life. This network includes shipping supplies not only for Hope of Life but also for them to share with orphanages in the region. Lee University, through the Leonard Center has visited and approved to use Hope of Life as a Study Abroad program so students can receive their traveling credits and benevolence credits on the same trip.

In fact, just last week, Carlos hosted Dr. Dennis McGuire, Dr. Don and Jackie Walker and others on a helicopter tour of the region. Carlos and Cheryl Vargas are doing a tremendous job of meeting countless needs. Operation Compassion is honored to be a small part of their ministry and double honored to have been able to start a beneficial network.
