Metro Atlanta Experiences Extreme Flooding

During the past couple of weeks, the Atlanta Metro area has received more than 15inches of rain creating a devastating flood in many areas. Most of these areas have not flooded in 20 or 30 years, including Six Flags over Georgia. There have been multiple road closings, hundreds of homes and business are under water and schools have been closed or inaccessible. Unfortunately, 8 lives have been lost in the flood waters as well.

Operation Compassion received a call for help and immediately notified their disaster relief network. God’s Pit Crew, under the direction of Randy Johnson is delivering semis of relief products to be staged at Compassion Atlanta. Compassion Atlanta, directed by Bruce Deel, has opened their facility as a staging warehouse for the region. In addition, Compassion Atlanta is searching for homes to house survivors that are now homeless.

In the midst of all the flooding, three churches have begun to reach out to the survivors and help piece their lives back together. New Vision Church, Trinity Chapel and Milford Church of God have mobilized their volunteers to supply food, water, cleaning supplies and other necessary products to assist with the recovery.

Operation Compassion is delivering semis to Compassion Atlanta and the Milford Church of God. A total of 6 semis have been delivered or are in route with more coming next week as needed.

The Milford Church of God, under the direction of Keith Gunter, pastor and Grant Cole, director of Parents with a Purpose have crews working to move people out of their flooded homes and are doing whatever is necessary to clean and prepare their homes for the families return.

As the Milford team was visiting displaced families, they came upon a woman looking at her flooded home. They inquired about her situation and discovered she was a widow. The team asked if they could help her and she consented. When the team entered the home to do an assessment of the damage and work to be completed, they discovered a Recovery Bible that their Addiction ministry gives away. Upon further conversation, this widow’s husband had gone through their recovery program and died one month later. The team is now in the process of gutting her home and making the repairs for her soon return.

You can help this widow and many others like her that are overwhelmed by the devastation. Please send your donations to or contact:

Operation Compassion Receives Unprecedented Shoe Donation

By admin, July 15, 2009

Operation Compassion recently received a large donation of 324,000 pairs of shoes. These shoes are being designated for distribution around the world. Ninety percent of the donation is for children, but widows and senior adults, many of whom have never had a new pair of shoes, will also receive shoes that will shield their feet from cuts, scrapes and infectious diseases.

In many third world countries, people go barefooted because of the expense of shoes or the unavailability of shoes. Children are especially susceptible to the dangers of going shoeless. It starts with a simple cut or scrape; walking in the dirt and mud, an infection sets up; with the lack of antibiotics to fight infection, the solution can disastrous.

Through this donation of casual, athletic, flip-flops and slippers, many children will be spared the pain and agony of such an ordeal in their young lives. In fact, in many instances, a simple sandal or flip-flop type of shoe is all that is needed to protect those young feet from possible tragedy.

In order to receive this summer donation, Operation Compassion had to present a distribution plan. In cooperation with the manufacturers, Soles4Souls, Inc. and Feed the Children, Operation Compassion will work to distribute these shoes in sixteen Caribbean Basin countries, Africa, Asia, South America and Central America.

Operation Compassion is currently raising funds to distribute these quality branded shoes. Some of these shoes are valued at $70 and higher. It is costing less than $1 per pair for a barefoot child to receive a pair of shoes. To help share the cost, send your donation to the address below or for a secure donation visit our web site.

Operation Compassion is local 501(c)3 relief organization based in Cleveland, TN. Operation Compassion annually receives and ships more than three thousand semi trucks of products across the United States and in 31 countries.

West Virginia Faces Devastating floods

By admin, May 15, 2009

On Friday, May 8, 2009 five and one half inches of rain fell within a six hour time frame. The hard and fast downpour created devastating flooding in a small but populated area of southern West Virginia. Mingo County suffered the most damage with more than 10,000 people being affected and more than 2,000 homes either destroyed or severely damaged.

As soon as the flooding became know, Operation Compassion began to respond to the region. Our disaster network swung into action as God’s Pit Crew responded with a semi truck of bottled water and another semi of equipment for clearing debris. Troy Duggan and Bridge of Hope also responded with FEMA food and meals ready to eat (MRE’s).

Leading the way into this disaster was Mike Hartwell, director of the Appalachian Dream Center in Holden, WV. Hartwell has coordinated this relief effort by being on site and positioning each team for maximum effort and response. ADC also delivered a truck full of supplies including diapers, Blankets, pillows, sheets, food and drinks. In addition, the American Bible Society has made Bibles available for the relief effort.

The flood waters were so powerful that Johnny Hager reported that 23 bridges floated by his house and two 2,000 gallon fuel tanks loaded with fuel. Mud is everywhere, in every home and business, mud as deep as five and six inches. So, now, the clean up begins. Scraping and sweeping the muddy water and removing the trees and pieces of your neighbor’s house; separating the trash from the good and what is a total loss and what can be salvaged. “Every time it floods in this valley it gets worse. There is just no end to it,” according to a flood victim stated.
