The Impact Indianapolis 2002

When the General Assembly convenes on August 5 - 10, 2002, the
Church of God will be making an eternal impact on the city
of Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. John D. Nichols, President of Operation
Compassion and International Executive Director of Church of
God Care Ministries, has put into motion a series of events
designed
to demonstrate care and concern for the needs of the people
of Indianapolis by making a lasting impact through three major
events.
Operation Compassion will be shipping two semi trucks with educational
books, supplemental workbooks, assorted school and office supplies
for underprivileged children and for schools with limited resources.
The Indianapolis Public Schools, with an enrollment of over 41,000
students and a graduation rate of 68%, is partnering in this unprecedented
effort by opening their warehouses to receive, sort and distribute
these supplies for impoverished children and needy schools.
On Wednesday evening, Operation Compassion and the Indianapolis
Police Department will partner to host a block party for inner
city children. Jimmy Jones, Director of Christ Central Ministries
will be leading this event that will include seven inflatable rides
and ten tents full of toys and games. Two semi trucks of food,
a variety of candy, chips and toys will be given to every child
in attendance. A unique gospel presentation, suitable for children
and adults, will be presented before the evening concludes. This
night promises to be full of fun and excitement for the 28% of
all children living in inner city poverty!
Operation Compassion has pulled all the stops for the final event
of the week. Two semi trucks loaded with one thousand five hundred
fifty pound food boxes will be delivered to the city of Indianapolis
for distribution to local Church of God food pantries. Everyday
in Indianapolis 738,000 people do not have regular meals, 55.5%
of the city’s children live in single parent families and
25% of all families live below the poverty level. These food boxes
will fill local Church of God food pantries for distribution to
these families in their communities weeks after the General Assembly
has adjourned.
Because of the vision and commitment of Operation Compassion to
lift people from their current state of poverty and a desire to
redeem them to God, the 69th General Assembly will not be business
as usual. This General Assembly will continue the dynamic spirit
of partnership and cooperation that Dr John Nichols began the last
time the General Assembly was held in Indianapolis when thousands
of senior adults living below the poverty level were given a box
of food. Only time and eternity will reveal the impact on the physical
and spiritual lives of men, women and children residing in the
city of Indianapolis, Indiana!
