Hunger Information
"I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty
and you gave me drink..." Lord when did we do this? Whatever
you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did
for me."
- Matthew 25:35, 40
Hunger
continues to plague an estimated one billion people - one in five
persons around the globe. Thirteen to eighteen million people, mostly
children and the elderly, die from hunger-related causes each year.
That's 35,000 people a day, over 1,000 every hour. That's the same
as 100 jumbo jets loaded with passengers - mostly children and the
elderly-crashing each day with no survivors. It's as many people
as died in Hiroshima, every three days. It's three times as many
people as died in the holocaust, each year. It's as many people,
in the last five years, as died in all the wars, revolutions and
murders in the past 150 years.
Twenty million Americans are hungry for at least a few days every
month. Fifteen separate studies have concluded that hunger is a
serious problem, here at home, in the United States.
Hunger is a condition of poverty. Living below the poverty line
puts tremendous strains on a household budget, adversely affecting
the ability to purchase a nutritionally adequate diet. In fact,
government surveys show that as income goes down, the nutritional
adequacy of the diet goes down as well.
Nearly 32 million Americans live below the poverty line with over
12% being 65 and over. Please, help us relieve some of the hunger
problems of those so desperately in need!
