Residents walk along Highway 12, the main road that connects Cape Hatteras National Seashore to the main land was destroyed by Hurricane Irene in Rodanthe

As Irene passed through the southern shoreline of North Carolina and Virginia, it became evident that the loss of power across hundreds of miles would be a challenge for millions of people. Smaller towns, like Warsaw, VA and Jackson, NC, were hit harder for lack of resources. Families at risk became more vulnerable; children, single parent families and the elderly living on fixed incomes and depending on social services would lose double. Without power they would lose their food and Irene hit in the last week of the month so they would have to wait for the next month before they could purchase new provisions. In an effort to help the survivors of the devastating tornado that struck Joplin, MO, Operation Compassion hosted two of our international partners, Croc Shoes and Ecolab for a joint distribution called Croc N’ Roll.

For the past 14 months Operation Compassion has been assisting disaster victims around the world and across the United States; with an outbreak of disasters that include earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, tornadoes and tropical storms. During this time, Operation Compassion has sent more than 350 semi-trucks or more than 10 million pounds of relief goods including various emergency supplies, products and equipment at a cost that exceeds $1,000,000. Because of the high volume, high demand and high costs of fuel and procurement, Operation Compassion’s disaster budget is in deficient but we are still responding.
