Six months after a widow in her 70’s came to the Appalachian Dream Center for assistance, her house has been completely torn down and rebuilt. During the Christmas holidays, an elderly woman came to ADC for a little assistance and fellowship. Shortly after meeting her, the staff became aware of the conditions she lived. Sunday, May 4, 2003 was a beautiful day. The sun was high and bright in the sky throughout the entire day. Shortly after the evening worship service, Richard Felts, Pastor of Parkway Church of God, was sitting in his office reflecting on the events of the day. Suddenly, it sounded as though the church was coming under attack! Hail began pounding the church and the cars left in the parking lot. Trees began to bend and snap like twigs. The forty-eight hour span of time from May 4th through May 5th was a miraculous time for a disabled couple living in the shadow of the Appalachian Dream Center. For some time, this elderly, disabled couple had lived in a house without adequate roofing. Time had eroded the shingles and water had begun the decaying process on the decking and trusses. During the recent floods in West Virginia, Operation Compassion’s Appalachian Dream Center was at the epicenter of relief activity. While the flooding was localized in McDowell County, the devastation was the greatest in the history of the state. Hundreds of homes were completely destroyed leaving only the slab foundations behind. Cars, trucks and other personal property were swept away by the floodwaters.
