Shortly after the Appalachian Dream Center opened its doors to relieve those suffering in abstract poverty throughout the region, Michael Hartwell, Director, noticed a dirty, elderly man watching from across the street. When January 2003 rolled around, Operation Compassion was enjoying a record Christmas season. Little did the staff know that the flurry of activity that usually surrounds the holidays would continue throughout the entire year. During the week of October 9-14, 2003, Lee University held a student led toy drive for Operation Compassion’s Appalachia Dream Center in Holden, WV. When the toy drive had concluded more than 900 brand new toys had been collected from the student body. Throughout the toy drive, the social service club Sigma Nu Sigma led the way by coordinating toy drop offs across the Lee Campus. During the summer months away from the busy schedule of campus life, one young lady, Lisa McCuan, began to pray for direction to impact the life of the Lee University campus. The only thing Lisa had was a scripture from Isaiah 58. Upon returning to campus for the fall semester, Lisa was talking with another student who kept mentioning Operation Compassion. Six months after a widow in her 70’s came to the Appalachian Dream Center for assistance, her house has been completely torn down and rebuilt. During the Christmas holidays, an elderly woman came to ADC for a little assistance and fellowship. Shortly after meeting her, the staff became aware of the conditions she lived.
