Operation Compassion Partners with Operation Christmas Child

By , November 19, 2006

Once again Operation Compassion, Samaritan’s Purse, Life Care Centers of America and Ocoee Trucking are partnering to provide 100,000 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is a program of Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse which provides shoe boxes filled with Christmas joy for children that would not receive any gifts. Over the years, Operation Christmas Child has expanded into more than ninety countries and millions of children.
Operation Compassion has provided work space in one of their Cleveland, TN warehouses for volunteers to put the shoes boxes together with products especially for children. Life Care Centers of America has provided the shoe boxes and Ocoee Trucking will deliver the shoe boxes to Franklin Graham’s headquarters in Boone, NC.

Volunteers from the Cleveland area have spent countless hours filling the boxes in an assembly type format. Lee University, elementary schools, senior adult centers, nurses, retirees and others have volunteered their time to put a joyful smile on a child’s face this Christmas.

“This has been a true team effort,” remarked David Lorency, international director of Operation Compassion. “Retired men and women, college kids, business person, it seems like everyone is getting involved in this volunteer effort,” continued Lorency.

“I am amazed at the fun everyone is having putting these boxes together,” remarked one volunteer. Another volunteered said, “I came over to give a couple of hours, before I knew it I had been here eight hours!”

Everyday for several weeks during the month of November the workroom is filled with men and women sitting, standing, sliding, lifting and filling each shoe box with games, small toys and candy for children to enjoy. A Bible is also included for each child as well. Operation Compassion starts collecting the products to be included in the shoe boxes in March of each year.

Normally, the shoe boxes are collected and randomly distributed to various countries around the world. However, this year the 100,000 shoe boxes from Operation Compassion will be distributed to one particular country which has not been announced.

WRCB-TV Channel 3 News in Chattanooga an NBC affiliate covered the story for local news.
